The Emperor Has No Clothes - Yes He Is NAKED !
The NYT had an editorial this past weekend (Feb 6, 2010) that trotted out some dangerous mistruths about the deficit and framed the issue as a left vs. right political game.
I hardly know where to start, but I will note that we've had massive accumulations of new debts under every single administration since the early 1980s, and that it hasn't seemed to matter which party has controlled which branches of government. One could be forgiven for suspecting that, when it comes to deficit spending, there aren't two parties, but only one.
The real truth is that we have a culture of reckless spending in DC that transcends either or both parties, and I always lose a bit of trust in those who attempt to paint it otherwise. This is simply not a partisan issue.
The second objection I have to this editorial rests with its attempt to step past our deficit by painting it as self-evidently necessary (emphasis mine):
The Truth About the Deficit
When the White House released its new budget last week, including more spending to create desperately needed jobs, Republican leaders in Congress denounced President Obama for driving up the deficit and demanded that the Democrats halt their “reckless” ways.
The deficit numbers — a projected $1.3 trillion in fiscal 2011 alone — are breathtaking. What is even more breathtaking is the Republicans’ cynical refusal to acknowledge that the country would never have gotten into so deep a hole if President George W. Bush and the Republican-led Congress had not spent years slashing taxes — mainly on the wealthy — and spending with far too little restraint. Unfortunately, the problem does not stop there.
Americans should be anxious, for reasons including the huge deficit. But the cold economic truth is this: At a time of high unemployment and fragile growth, the last thing the government should do is to slash spending. That will only drive the economy into deeper trouble.
I disagree. I happen to think that that an economic crisis is an excellent time to take a good hard look at spending habits, and, if they aren't serving you, to slash them mercilessly.
The cold economic truth is that spending wildly beyond your means doesn't make sense in any economic environment. All it does is trade temporary relief today for deeper economic pain later on.
But there's another assumption baked into this editorial that is desperately off the mark. It is the idea that government spending is helping to lower unemployment and stabilize fragile growth, which implicitly assumes that the spending is both necessary and appropriately directed.
What if neither were actually true?
For the record, I would have an entirely different view of government spending if it were spent on different things. For example, I am really taken by the new high speed trains (and stations) that China has received for its government expenditures:

Now that's a good use of public monies! Awesome. I would love to see such modern investments being made in my own country.
Instead, as we gaze across the federal budget pie, it's pretty obvious that our major expenditures have relatively little to do with long-term investments or capital improvements:

More than half of our money is being spent on mandatory entitlement distributions, which simply means money going towards providing basic living expenses and health care. Both are important to the recipients, but these expenditures are centered on current consumption, not long-term prosperity.
Now take a look at the remaining parts of the pie, specifically defense spending. As enormous as that $744 billion wedge is, it understates the true extent of our security expenditures, because black-book spending and portions of the DOE, DHS, and other budgets that are dedicated to defense activities are hidden over there in the "Nondefense" pie wedge.
Some estimates suggest that our yearly defense outlays now approach $1 trillion.
Let's put that in context. Here are the projected revenues for the 2011 fiscal year:

If we divide defense spending of $744 billion by projected individual income taxes ($1,121 billion), we find that 66%, two-thirds (!) of all such receipts, are consumed by defense spending.
It pretty much goes without saying that a nation cannot be prosperous in the long run if it is spending two-thirds of its individual income tax receipts on defense expenditures.
Of course, we've managed to hide this over the years by going deeper and deeper into debt, so most people are not directly aware that two-thirds of their April 15th contributions are mainly headed either overseas or into the coffers of defense contractors.
Only 17% of our entire 2011 budget is going to go to nondefense spending, and the lion's share of that is for programs and hires that are already in motion or in place.
84% of all receipts are going to go towards mandatory spending in 2011. Let that sink in for a moment. 84%. Let me type that slowly: e.i.g.h.t.y. f.o.u.r. p.e.r.c.e.n.t.
And 94% of all revenues are entirely consumed by mandatory spending plus the interest payments (also arguably "mandatory"). So no matter how much politicians say they want to "cut spending', rest assured that they have backed themselves into a very sharp corner. There's no maneuvering room left.
In FY 2011 expenditures are slated to exceed revenues by 49%. Forty-nine percent. 49% (!). Okay, now I am scaring myself.
Now matter how you slice these expenditures, they are unsustainable.
Think of how intense the future budget battles would be if the government had to live within its means. Imagine if each wedge of the budget had to be shrunk by a third to bring expenditures in line with revenues. Politically, I just can't see this happening, which is why I continue to believe that every effort will be made to print our way out of the problem.
As a side note, I somehow missed this article from Friday, notable because it is the first public trial balloon that I've seen floating the idea that the Fed might not stop its thin-air money-printing program:

The Federal Reserve would consider reopening its program to support the mortgage market if interest rates spiked or the economy showed new weakness, Federal Reserve Bank of New York President William C. Dudley said in two new interviews.
Remember, I thought that the end of March would be the time when we would get our read on whether the program would involve renewed efforts at borrowing and printing our way out of our easy-money debt pile-up. Looks like we're right on track.
Now, back to the editorial.
The idea that there's no room to cut government expenditures without seriously impacting the economy is pure bunk. We could easily trim defense spending without impacting our economy in the slightest, if we chose to reduce the amount of money we are sending overseas to maintain 700+ foreign military bases and prosecute two wars.
Next, we might also imagine that if we diverted money being spent on military expenditures into, say, high speed trains, wind farms, natural gas pipelines and distribution stations, and an upgraded electrical smart grid (for example), we'd get far more immediate and lasting economic benefit (and improved national security too, I might point out) than we would out of so-called "defense spending."
The cold economic truth is that we are slowly bankrupting our country. And we are spending our money on things that do not contribute to our collective long-term prosperity.
Instead, I wish that this editorial, and dozens of others like it in other newspapers, would take a deep breath and ask the deeper and harder questions about our national priorities, challenges, and opportunities, and then call for a significant departure from the business-as-usual budget fiasco that is slowly but steadily leading us towards a vastly diminished future.
In short, somebody has to say it: The emperor has no clothes.
Until we can have a legitimate discussion about the true economic costs and opportunities lost associated with our current expenditure regime, I do not see much hope that we'll magically navigate ourselves to a better, more prosperous future.
That's the real truth about the deficit.

To Be Or Not To Be !
he U.S. is going into an unbelievable death spiral. Even with the Dow up the unemployment numbers are staggering. This is why I preach entrepreneurialism. I believe that controlling your own future is not only your safest bet, but the best way to stay nimble and profit from this economic situation. One Man Army - NOT !!!
Ego is a powerful thing. Every human likes to believe that they will “not go quietly into the night.” We like to visualize ourselves as the super hero. Look at our childhood icons: Batman, Superman, Ironman, whatever man. There is something in all of us that wants to single-handedly take on the world.
One man can have a huge impact on the world, think Martin Luther King Jr. Ask any poker player in the world “Who is the best?” and they will answer “I am” 99% of the time. Roger Federer is the greatest tennis player in history based on his work ethic. Every one of these examples shows the importance of individual confidence and laser focused determination. What you rarely hear about though, is the team of people that got superstar “over the top.”
The quote “There is power in numbers” is applicable in everything, especially business. When I met my VP, David Cronk two years ago I had no idea the impact he would have on my life. When I met my business partner Michael two years ago we didn’t even like each other. Each new person I have connected with has added another brick to my foundation.
In some cases, they have been another weapon in my arsenal. Andy Andrews calls this your “board of directors.” If you can be completely honest with yourself, evaluate your skill sets, and figure out where your weaknesses are, you can begin to create your own “board of directors” to shore up your leaks. You should always have something to offer in return. A kind word and compliment may be all you have but that may also be enough.

Go build your army.

My life is ever-changing. Between family, work,business travel and CarbonCopyPRO, people approaching me with new ideas, and my other interests, I am always on the go. This month, however, has seemed a bit overboard. I moved my family to Arkansas last year , set up a new life, took on a new leadership role with HP and put my children into a new schools. Yes, I am busy. As I started to feel my shoulders tightening and my chest getting taught I took a moment to step back and reflect. There have been a few key times in my life where I have felt things were tougher than they needed to be. These times all revolved around massive changes in my life.
I think the average human retracts in these situations. I see it all the time. One setback after another occurs and the reason that initially motivated the change takes a back seat to the current stress level. This is what is known as the “elastic band effect”. If you have never heard of the elastic band effect then let me explain. Human beings are creatures of habit, both mentally and physically. When we try to create change we have to unseat all the established routines in our life. We also have to rewire our brain to do something different. As we begin to stretch the elastic band further and further it gets tighter and tighter. At the time where the most change is occurring the tension of the elastic band becomes almost unbearable. This can manifest itself it many different setbacks in your life. At the tightest point, most people allow the elastic band to pull them back into there old habits. Back to there “comfort zone”.
I have chosen the other path.
When that elastic band gets tightest and times get toughest I choose to be even more committed to the result. I refuse to lose. Some people call this stubborn or egomaniacal. I call it greatness. This is the tipping point of what separates the best from the rest. That ability to endure pain that one extra minute, hour, or day. Eventually that elastic has no choice but to snap. When that happens, you experience a euphoria like no other. You realize your own strength and what you can truly accomplish. When I see it happen for members of our community it is my moment of pure joy. It is that “a ha” moment.
And then I tell them to begin the stretch again.
LIFE is always toughest as you begin to break through ... hold on thru the night, because joy, unspeakable JOY comes in the morning !

When we try to create change we have to unseat all the established routines in our life. We also have to rewire our brain to do something different. As we begin to stretch the elastic band further and further it gets tighter and tighter. At the time where the most change is occurring the tension of the elastic band becomes almost unbearable. This can manifest itself it many different setbacks in your life. At the tightest point, most people allow the elastic band to pull them back into there old habits. Back to there “comfort zone”.
I have chosen the other path.
When that elastic band gets tightest and times get toughest I choose to be even more committed to the result. I refuse to lose. Some people call this stubborn or egomaniacal. I call it greatness. This is the tipping point of what separates the best from the rest. That ability to endure pain that one extra minute, hour, or day. Eventually that elastic has no choice but to snap. When that happens, you experience a euphoria like no other. You realize your own strength and what you can truly accomplish. When I see it happen for members of our community it is my moment of pure joy. It is that “a ha” moment.
And then I tell them to begin the stretch again.

A World Without People !
This week a man in Austin, TX burned down his house, boarded his private plane and flew into an IRS building; another angry man bulldozed his home, as it went into foreclosure, and Tiger Woods apologized to the world for cheating on his wife.
I'm sure some politician somewhere is discussing these events, and pointing the finger of blame at his or her democrat or republican counter part; while the people wonder and grope after sticks and straw.
It was dis-heartening when humanity began to be reduced to just people, and it is gut wrenching to watch as people become stories, points of conversation, and inflection points. It seems that people have become the back drop in the process of life, and some how pain and confusion have taken center stage.
It occurs to me that we should do something other than point, blame and discuss; and it terrifies me that this could be the tip of the ice berg; and in an effort to be politically correct in some cases, and overly accepting in other cases, we have created a "lose/lose" proposition.
Our fore fathers deliberated, fought and bled to create freedoms from, and freedoms to ... my great/great/great grand father bought himself, and his family out slavery and pursued his passion and dreams in Center Union, Texas - I shutter at what he'd think and say today - this is not what he signed up for, but I'm sure he'd understand the fierce urgency of the moment.
As we enter the new decade, as we push forward to stop terrorism, and right set our economy, we must remember that if we destroy all the people in the process, we've missed the point and the purpose!

9 Things You Must Do To Build Winning Relationships At Work/ In Life:
1. Human Being vs. Being Human
Organizations run by a closed group of executives hovering above in the "C - suite" are falling. Leading Without A Title, where everyone is a key player is the new way to win in business, is where it's at! You can't treat human beings like capital - you will lose your greatest talent.
2. Be One of the Few Who Perfect the Endangered Craft
It's an amazing time to be alive. Revolutionary technological innovation to enhance our lives, freedom of choice to create the life you love, and the daily opportunity to choose from an endless list of beautiful rewards. Yet an insatiable hunger still lingers inside each one of us - the hunger to be heard/ to be connected/ to be celebrated/ to be revelant - HEAR THEIR STORY.
The new leadership is all about relationships with people. And you can't relate without listening. It's impossible. Yet engaged listening is a craft rarely mastered by leaders. You can have the most competent leader in the world, but if he doesn't listen his leadership potential will go unrealized.
Feeding the hunger to be heard brings out the best in people. People will trust you, respect you and shatter their limitations for you when you give them the gift of listening ( this is why I do lot's of 1x1's).
3. Find What Is Scarce
We tend to value that which is scarce. We put a premium on objects and experiences we believe will run out: We are impacted and motivated most by that which we don't come across everyday or that which comes in a limited supply. If you are seeking to create long term loyalty in your business relationships, ask yourself what is noticeably scarce? Is it generosity? Authenticity? Encouragement? Spot the scarcity and BECOME IT!
4. Be the Most Positive Person in the Room
Today there is perpetual buzz about the state of the economy, the shock of once-admired organizations collapsing before our eyes and the alarming daily rate of bankruptcy. Yes this is current reality however, focusing relentlessly on negativity is subscribing to failure.
Powerful leaders neutralize the infectious cycle of negativity; they deploy hope where it's seemingly forsaken. Enlisting yourself as the most positive person in the room breaks the binds of negativity. MAKE SENSE OF THE CHAOS / PROVIDE HOPE !
5. Go Bigger than Your Paycheck
You might not love the design of everything HP, but have the audacity to go bigger than your role. If a colleague is struggling to meet a deadline or lagging in productivity, don't be the first to point out the deficiency, be the first to roll up your sleeves and do whatever it takes to help out. Knock the status quo "it's not my job" to its knees and do more than you are paid for.
6. Be the Perfect Investment
When it comes to your relationships, be a dream investment: low cost with exceptional high return. Prove to be a no gossip, no games, no regrets, no maintenance investment of other people's time and focus. Manage yourself with others at the highest level possible - a.k.a with grace/mercy/reliability.
7. Get Naked in Your Conversations
Make your conversations count. Speak with candor. Brave the real issue. Say only that which is helpful: don't use your words to criticize or divide. Anybody can do that. Be radically honest, define reality. Trust is born out of the truth. Sloganeering and masking the truth breeds mistrust and disrespect. Go to the difficult truths and people will go the mile with you.
8. Get Famous for Reliability
Every single person needs to take ownership of the organization's results. Everyone needs to take responsibility for what does or does not get accomplished in a day. Anyone can reach success if they consistently do the right things. Reliability, no matter what, is the right thing. Reliability translates into ownership and taking ownership is a way to present yourself as a leader.

Commit to noticing everyone. The new ISR in the elevator on Monday morning, the VP's assistant, the receptionist, the customers, the interns... Better Daze Ahead ?!?!
As entrepreneurs and business owners, it’s incredibly important for us to stay attune to the world’s financial news. The recognition of trends, niche opportunities and the anticipation of economic movements are nothing short of necessities. However I personally, and I’m sure this resonates with the majority of you reading this, have grown tired of the incessant negativity that is spoon fed the masses daily.
Yes, things are precarious, and there is no definitive, singular resolution for the mess we have found ourselves in. But what I propose is that we begin shift this doomsday, limiting perspective into one that actually celebrates the opportunities this “calamity” has presented. The reality of the situation is that the structure of our larger global system was flawed, and needed massive renovation. Would we have preferred it happened differently? Of course we would. The painful byproducts of corporate irresponsibility, imperialist arrogance and simple greed have touched us all in some manner.
But the momentum has begun, and is ready to be harnessed. We exist in an age where the dissemination of information has created a more democratic and equitable platform for global progress than ever before. Not just in the limiting sense of more consumerism, but more comprehensively as real humanistic responsibility. Of course there will always be classes of wealth, I do not argue against that. But I would argue that they do not have to ignore the principles of mutual benefit. We all can prosper. It does not have to come at the expense of another human being.
The days of corporate monopolies, disguised as mergers, strategic acquisitions and the like are over. Commercial banking is dead. The days of building business on bricks of debt and the mortar of creative financing are over. I personally could go the rest of my life without hearing the word “derivative” ever again! So where does this leave us? Exactly where we should be, reliant on ourselves.
Strangely, no one really discusses with as much fervor about how bad things are, what actually pulled us from the first depression, or the recession of 2001. Entrepreneurs. Innovation. Risk takers. Half of our current Fortune 500 companies were started during a recession. What does this tell us? Yes, things are precarious, and there is no definitive, singular resolution for the mess we have found ourselves in. But what I propose is that we begin shift this doomsday, limiting perspective into one that actually celebrates the opportunities this “calamity” has presented. The reality of the situation is that the structure of our larger global system was flawed, and needed massive renovation. Would we have preferred it happened differently? Of course we would. The painful byproducts of corporate irresponsibility, imperialist arrogance and simple greed have touched us all in some manner.
But the momentum has begun, and is ready to be harnessed. We exist in an age where the dissemination of information has created a more democratic and equitable platform for global progress than ever before. Not just in the limiting sense of more consumerism, but more comprehensively as real humanistic responsibility. Of course there will always be classes of wealth, I do not argue against that. But I would argue that they do not have to ignore the principles of mutual benefit. We all can prosper. It does not have to come at the expense of another human being.
The days of corporate monopolies, disguised as mergers, strategic acquisitions and the like are over. Commercial banking is dead. The days of building business on bricks of debt and the mortar of creative financing are over. I personally could go the rest of my life without hearing the word “derivative” ever again! So where does this leave us? Exactly where we should be, reliant on ourselves.
Strangely, no one really discusses with as much fervor about how bad things are, what actually pulled us from the first depression, or the recession of 2001. Entrepreneurs. Innovation. Risk takers. Half of our current Fortune 500 companies were started during a recession. What does this tell us? Feel as if you’re surrounded by negative vibes?
Maybe it’s because you keep hanging out with the wrong people. Keep your mood up by avoiding these 10 types of people:
1. The Judgmental – These are people incapable of accepting opinions counter to theirs, who have a default bias on everything. If you can’t deal with them, don’t bother; they’ll rarely see it anyone else’s way.
2. The Parasite – They’re clingy types who prey and become dependent on their unsuspecting victims. The only way to deal with parasites is to either teach them how to stand on their own or to avoid them altogether!
3. The Know-It-All – A know-it-all is someone who knows a lot of things and loves rubbing it in everyone’s face, or someone who professes to know a lot of things but actually knows very little. Know-it-alls exude a certain kind of authority and arrogance that can easily deceive people, so be careful not to get fooled!
4. The Dementor - These ghostly creatures from the Harry Potter series suck the life and happiness out of a person. In our world, you’ll always feel tired and spent when you’re around a “Dementor." They can’t help but bring negativity wherever they go, so keep happy by steering clear of these mood downers!

As much as you might trust them, love them, and have already spent years and years cultivating your friendship, these people are more than capable of selling you out in a second! Do You Know Where You're Going To !
It has been a few weeks since I have written one of these. With the holidays and the year beginning to wind down, I felt the timeliness of this message could not be better.
Oh the Holidays… The crisp snap of the winter breeze, lights emerging from every corner imaginable; illuminating the evening skies like the sun just squeezed itself through the screen door. It’s a time for celebration, a time for reflection. For smiles, and long overdue embraces that have sat on shelves collecting the dust of neglect.
For too many people the world over, this holiday brings with it a new anticipation. The close of the year is upon us, the months passed have been marked with a collective anxiety of what is to come. Will it get better? Has the worst of it passed? What will I do next year?
Entrepreneurs are not immune to these same moments of uncertainty, however when one has the reigns in their hands the navigation of these troublesome times is infinitely easier.
This Holiday season holds a special anticipation for me personally. The birth of my second child is imminent (and I mean imminent, the bag is packed by the door). I know many of you reading this are parents as well. You know all too well the worry and the hope. The desire for everything to be better for them, than it was for you. It’s why we put in the hours, sacrifice daily, sleep less, desire more.
We are all someone’s children. We all have a hometown, a first kiss, a first disappointment, a first job. But the reality is these things, while important in the shape of our being, have no bearing on where our lives may take us. What we desire in life, what we desire for our children, lies ahead and not behind us.
As we come into this new year, let’s embrace the promise of infinite possibility. Forget whatever hurdle or misstep may have plagued you this past year and focus on where you want to be.
After all, it doesn’t matter where you’re from, it’s about where you’re going.

Google Me Happy !
Thoughts On Google And China
Google’s decision to second-guess its relationship with China has raised some interesting questions recently. Namely, whether Google’s decision sprang from their moral opposition to censorship, or simply from a decreased financial interest in a country with a much more popular search engine, known as Baidu. So far, the controversy appears to be more of a commercial, as opposed to a political dilemma. A private, business-related concern. But whenever the question of morality, of a battle between good (Google) and evil, comes into play in the news, you can be sure that the blogosphere will start freaking out.
Probably the most quoted passage in the outpouring of articles on Google China (or Google.cn) is Google’s well-polished credo: “Don’t be evil.” The more opinionated news outlets cite this as the reason that Google is shying away from China, because censoring websites and people’s freedom of speech is, you know, “evil.” But the real question is, are China’s actions any more “evil” than Google’s decision to set up shop in a Communist country already well-known for their web censorship in the hopes of making a profit to begin with.
On the evil scale, though, I’m taking Google’s side on this. At least for now. In Google’s statement on January 12th, they claimed that they launched the site in China “in the belief that the benefits of increased access to information for people in China and a more open Internet outweighed our discomfort in agreeing to censor some results.” Sounds convincing enough. This came with the proviso that they would carefully monitor the conditions in China, since there has been growing tendency toward web censorship in the country, the latest victim being porn websites. Google’s statement said that, should China ramp up their censorship policies, they would not hesitate to reconsider their agreement.
So what did China do, again, that got Google’s jocks in the ringer? As has been widely reported, in December a series of “cyberattacks” originating in China took place against Chinese human rights advocates living inside the country and in other parts of the world. Their Gmail accounts were hacked into, they say. Plus, the security apparatuses of thirty-four companies in Silicon Valley were breached, and corporate data tampered with.
No one is quite sure where these attacks originated. And of course the Chinese government is casting itself as a victim, too! As if the attacks were perpetrated by a group of Chinese Internet trolls. That, of course, is highly unlikely, considering China has the biggest Internet filtration system in the world, and its government has previously blocked searches for things like, say, “The Dalai Lama” or “Tiananmen Square Massacre.” Twitter and Facebook have already been blocked in China. (How do people keep in touch!?) Chances are, these breaches of security were performed by “hackers” employed directly by the Chinese government. But of course, we can’t be sure. Nobody knows. Google has since asked the N.S.A. for help investigating the issue.
This is all taking place over the web, remember, in a kind of virtual reality. I don’t even like to think about the amount of time these Google hackers in China are spending on the Internet every day in order to gain access to human right’s activist’s accounts.
Another important question—something that’s been brought up over the last few weeks—is whether Google’s decision to back out of China constitutes a kind of neo-imperialism. In other words, is Google, by setting up shop in China and then requesting that the Chinese government abide by the United States’ freedom of speech laws, making a backhanded attempt at cultural dominance?
That’s a tough one. And I suppose it’s the crucial issue. Google, being the omnipotent superpower of online search engines, is also testing the waters of globalization. They seem to be overstepping their boundaries. Then again, international human rights organizations have shown their support for Google. Liberal Chinese see it as an outrage that their government might be hacking into their Gmail accounts sometime soon. The more educated Chinese are on Google’s side. They see web censorship as an infringement on their rights.
But even so, do Google’s complaints put any real pressure on the Chinese government to revise its ongoing commitment to censorship? Does China need Google that much?
It doesn’t seem like it. So they miss out on the new Google Android. No big loss.
That China doesn’t really need Google was made fairly clear by China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Ma Zhaoxu. He said, “Foreign enterprises in China need to adhere to China’s hypocritical involvement with laws and regulations, respect the interests of the general public and cultural traditions, and shoulder corresponding responsibilities.” In other words, Google knew what they were getting into. And if they want to intrude on the Chinese market, they’re going to have to play by the Chinese market’s rules. This makes it seem pretty cut and dry. A company like Google, however almighty it may seem, doesn’t have the right to alter China’s rule of law. Or so the Chinese adamantly believe.
So far, everyone involved in this dilemma has been behaving with appropriate political correctness. When Hilary Clinton addressed the issue of Internet censorship on January 21st, she didn’t even name names (China, Iran). “Those who disrupt the free flow of information in our society or any other pose a threat to our economy, our government and our civil society,” she said, linking Internet freedom with the virtues of the United States. She didn’t call out China, partly because, as you may remember, the US is in serious debt to the Chinese right now. (Hmmm. In fact China owns more US dollars than any other country or entity in the world. A different topic for a different day though…) We have to be careful how we play this one. Google may only be an Internet search engine, but with its millions of worldwide users, it is hard to imagine life in 2010 without it. Does Google have the potential to become the most dangerous political weapon the US has ever had?

Creating S.M.A.R.T. Goals
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Timely
Specific - A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal. To set a specific goal you must answer the six "W" questions:
*Who: Who is involved?
*What: What do I want to accomplish?
*Where: Identify a location.
*When: Establish a time frame.
*Which: Identify requirements and constraints.
*Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal.
EXAMPLE: A general goal would be, "Get in shape." But a specific goal would say, "Join a health club and workout 3 days a week."
Measurable - Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of each goal you set. When you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates, and experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on to continued effort required to reach your goal.
To determine if your goal is measurable, ask questions such as......How much? How many? How will I know when it is accomplished?
Attainable - When you identify goals that are most important to you, you begin to figure out ways you can make them come true. You develop the attitudes, abilities, skills, and financial capacity to reach them. You begin seeing previously overlooked opportunities to bring yourself closer to the achievement of your goals.
You can attain most any goal you set when you plan your steps wisely and establish a time frame that allows you to carry out those steps. Goals that may have seemed far away and out of reach eventually move closer and become attainable, not because your goals shrink, but because you grow and expand to match them. When you list your goals you build your self-image. You see yourself as worthy of these goals, and develop the traits and personality that allow you to possess them.
Realistic - To be realistic, a goal must represent an objective toward which you are both willing and able to work. A goal can be both high and realistic; you are the only one who can decide just how high your goal should be. But be sure that every goal represents substantial progress. A high goal is frequently easier to reach than a low one because a low goal exerts low motivational force. Some of the hardest jobs you ever accomplished actually seem easy simply because they were a labor of love.
Your goal is probably realistic if you truly believe that it can be accomplished. Additional ways to know if your goal is realistic is to determine if you have accomplished anything similar in the past or ask yourself what conditions would have to exist to accomplish this goal.

Whether you're already an entrepreneur, or just thinking about becoming one, you are invariably motivated by one of two things, or maybe even both--passion and necessity. Very often, entrepreneurs do what they do simply because they like it and want to do it. And because entrepreneurs, particularly very successful ones, rarely do anything half-way, they tend to pursue their lives and their businesses with a unique intensity. In short, they are passionate about how they live and work.
Sometimes though, entrepreneurs start a business because they have to.
Maybe it was because they were laid off from their jobs, or even worse, fired. Perhaps their company went out of business and left them out of work, or didn't pay them enough money. In today's economy, it's not uncommon to see whole industries collapse when their markets dry up, as we're seeing with real estate, construction, mortgage lending and automobiles. Many of today's highly successful companies were started by entrepreneurs and bred from pure necessity, plain and simple.
Entrepreneurship carries with it many rewards--and many risks. It is often said that when you are self-employed, you wake up unemployed every morning. But according to Experian, one of the three biggest credit reporting agencies, self-employed entrepreneurs make about 25% more than the general population. Of course when you really consider income differential, you also need to realize that most of the wealthiest men in America made their fortunes as entrepreneurs. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Donald Trump and Sam Walton are all self-made billionaire entrepreneurs.
But what about the risks? According to Entrepreneur Magazine somewhere between 85 and 94% % of all new business fail within the first 5 years. According to Dr. Gregory B. Murphy, associate dean and director of the MBA program for the College of Business at the University of Southern Indiana, the number of small businesses that close up shop due to severe financial distress such as bankruptcy is more on the order of 30%-40%. Regardless, this is still a huge rate of attrition.
Regardless of the risk, according to a study of entrepreneurs conducted by Master Card International, 65% of small business owners would tell a friend to start a business now, rather than wait a year. And according to MSNBC, small businesses are responsible for over 75% of the net new jobs in the economy.
These businesses often start very small--called micro businesses--and then grow rapidly. The US Census Bureau reports that 49% of the nation's businesses are run from home, and industry analyst the Dieringer Group places the number of Americans running businesses from home at 45.1 million. Today, more so than ever, it is easy to start such a home-based business. Global search engine giant Yahoo reports that well over 75% percent of adults surveyed online indicated that the Internet directly facilitated the launch of their new business.
Based on all of this, regardless of whether you are--or want to be--an entrepreneur based on passion or necessity, you also need to consider the risk versus the reward. The potential benefits are vast and unlimited. The major risk is that you have about a 50% chance of failure. But you can get around that by doing some very basic things.
Leaders are not born. They are created. Anyone can become a leader in any area if they want to. (Read OUTLIERS by Malcom Gladwell) You need to set realistic expectations and manage them aggressively and then stick the bleep in there!
Success is almost entirely based on determination--having the discipline to hang in there even when you feel like quitting 1000 times. Most entrepreneurs fail because they simply give up too soon. Free enterprise is really about the survival of the fittest, where only the strongest survive. The formula is simple--figure out what you what and then don't quit until you have achieved your goals.
